Keeping Mold And Mildew Out Of Your Home

Both mold and mildew are types of fungi and can be caused by moisture. Mildew shows up really fast in clothes that are left wet or damp for a sufficient amount of time and the temperature is correct for development. This can happen when you leave wet clothes in a warm dryer or when you pack them away until the next time you need them. There are ways to prevent this from happening. Make sure clothes in the dryer are thoroughly dried before putting them away and never leave them in the washer or dryer when they are wet.

If these clothes are even a little bit damp, you are leaving the chance for mildew to grow. When you pack away clothes for the seasons you should have some air tight containers to put them in. These bags will keep the moisture from getting to the clothes. Using silica gel packets or activated alumina can help prevent the moisture too in containers or closets and are safe for clothes. This mildew can appear in other places as well especially when you live in an older home.

If you happen to rent or own an older home there could be mold or mildew. This stuff could be in your old walls or the old carpets that you have tried to clean. It can be caused from the heat if there is moisture present or from condensation if it gets too cold. Although mold and mildew need warmth to grow, the cold can cause condensation and if it warms enough with the moisture still present, it can cause the fungi to grow.

To help prevent mold or mildew from growing in your home, you need to keep the temperature as stable as possible. This means not too hot or too cold. Using a dehumidifier can help take moisture out of the air and during the summertime when it is hot and humidity can be a problem, keeping your air conditioning set at a reasonable temperature will help too. In the wintertime when it is necessary to use heating, be sure to use a dehumidifier if necessary to keep the moisture out of the air because the moisture and heat combined can cause mold and mildew.

Make sure the the temperature in your attic and basement are kept as stable and moisture free as possible too. Mold prefers temperatures between 40 and 100 degrees Fahrenheit. The temperature in your attic or basement can easily be in this range so making sure there is as little moisture as possible in them is vital. Others places in the home that need to be kept as clean and dry as possible are, of course, the bathroom and kitchen. These are also two common places to find these fungi.
