Keep Your Fireplace Well Maintained Whether It Is Gas Or Wood

By:

In past history the fireplace was of so much importance to homes in the cold weather because it was often the only source of heat and for cooking. In smaller homes there would likely only be one fireplace, but in the bigger homes there could be several fireplaces. As time went on wood burning stoves were used in kitchen because it made cooking a lot easier, but in other rooms a fireplace was still used for many years. Eventually gas and electric heating and stove came into play and the fireplace became more of an ornament to enjoy for ambiance instead of an essential element.

Today we still enjoy our fireplaces, some are wood burning because people like the smell, while others prefer the convenience of one that burns gas. Which ever one you might have in your home, they still must have proper maintenance if you want them to be safe. Each and every year they must be looked over carefully to be positive there are no problems. A gas burning fireplace can develop a dangerous leak or a wood burning one can can get lined with creosote and catch fire.

If you have a gas burning fireplace, it is a good idea to have someone from your gas company or another company that installs and repairs them to come out and inspect any fitting and parts associated with it. You never want to risk having a leak whether you are using your fireplace or not. You never want to work on your own gas appliances because it would be too easy to cause a fire or explosion. Always make sure whoever you get to repair or maintain your gas fireplace is certified and licensed. This is nothing you ever want to leave to an amateur or unlicensed handyman.

The same can be said if you have a wood burning fireplace. Even though they might not be as complicated in appearance as a gas burner, they still must be cleaned and checked. Fire places and chimneys are usually made from brick or stone and the mortar that holds them together can crack and deteriorate over the years. Any time the flame from the fire can get in between cracks inside the fireplace box or chimney, you run the risk of a fire starting in your walls or on the roof.

You need to have a chimney cap in place to keep sparks from burning wood from landing on the roof. You might not think it is as necessary to get a certified and licensed chimney sweep and repair person for a wood burner, but it most definitely is.
