Chennai is known as the cultural capital of South India. Be it Carnatic Music or Bharatnatyam, almost everyone around the world knows where to fly to. With innumerable schools for teaching classical music and dance in the city, we do keep up the city of contrasts title with many western/contemporary music and dance schools in the city competing for excellence. Well, come to think of it, we have the best of the regional and international performing arts teaching centers here in the city, no questions about that. The question arises when we wonder about the diversity of our country and the variety of dance forms we could be cultivating in our local culture. That brings us to perform a search on the best dance schools teaching Kathak, one of the classic North Indian traditional dance forms, in the city of Chennai.

Kathak, originally performed by the nomads in the north western parts of India as a form of storytelling to fellow villagers, has evolved into one of the eight most cherished classical dances of India. In Chennai, Devaniya at Mylapore, run by dancer Jigyasa Giri , is one of the few schools dedicated to Kathak enthusiasts. JIgyasa, a great lover of performing arts, has been awarded for bringing about a cross cultural synergy in the field of dancing. The school is considered one of the best places in Chennai to learn the finer nuances of Kathak, the emotion and energy as they call it, with absolute passion and devotion to the art.

Then theres Jathiswaraalaya, again at Mylapore, an Indian classical dance school, teaching mostly Bharatnatyam and Kathak. The Guru, Lakshmi Kannan, who is also the director of the institute, imparts the dance education and rigorous training that she has gained from her Guru Renuka Desai and Vijay to Kathak aspirants.

Vipanchee, at Karpagam Avenue, is one another place where Kathak is being taught among an assortment of other classical dances. They provide special classes and advanced training in many classical dance forms according to your interest.

Mudra School of Dance has started offering Kathak classes in Kodambakkam and Anna Nagar too. The course offered is in Lucknow Gharana Kathak and is meant only for ladies above 12 years of age.

Are there more kathak schools in the city? Do let us know.
