Jump Higher - How To Choose Box Height For Depth Jumps

By:

I'm going to go over which jump height you want to choose for your depth jumps. Your ability to absorb force is going to determine how high of a box you can use. For instance, some of you are going to jump off a twelve inch box, and you're really going to jump just as high as if you weren't jumping off of a box. But what you'll notice is if you incrementally increase that box height - maybe you go from 12 to 18 inches, and then to 24 inches, and you keep going up, you'll realize there's a point where you're jumping higher. If you go past that point, you'll realize you're not jumping quite as high.

What you want to do is start with a low box height. Test and see how high you jump. Then increase that height. Once you reach a height that you're jumping higher make sure and test it a few different times, 3-5 times to make sure that you're really jumping higher at this box height. Then each time you do that exercise you're going to want to retest. Warm yourself into that higher box height and make sure that that is the height that is getting you to jump at your maximum intensity. So, once you have found the box height that allows you to jump at your maximum intensity that is what you will use during your repetitions.

Now, the reason you want to retest that often is because your ability to absorb and transfer force is going to improve over time. So what you're going to want to do is retest that next week. Start at a lower box height and you may notice that you can now handle a larger box, so that's what you'll want to do.
