The historic gold mining town of Julian was founded during a gold strike in 1869 and very quickly became a community in it's own right. Men and women chose to stay in Julian because of the close relationships that developed among families and the climate that produced an ease of fruitful living, namely agriculture (especially apples) in the region.

The entire township of Julian is designated as a full-fledge historical district. The real life images of cowboys strolling down the streets, a California frontier town (with actual old wooden store fronts), guided tours and abounding in numerous historic sites all have a tremendous appeal to many tourists.

Exploring the many facets that Julian has to offer will amaze you will all that it is possible to do. You may visit some of the many small shops around the town, visit the galleries, the pioneer museum or you may even visit the gold mines. Horse drawn carriage rides are available as well as the local Santa Ysabil casino.

The Julian Hotel is located in the middle of the town of Julian and has the honor of being the oldest known hotel operating in southern California. Nestled among the awesome Cuyamaca Mountains, prolific wineries and gold panning activities that still abound among Julian residents, the Julian Hotel looks to be a favorite tourist destination for years to come.

While visiting Julian you may spend your days relaxing around your hotel or the pool . If you desire you may even escape to Lake Cuyamaca or one of the many parks that surround the area. Hiking is also available for those who prefer the outdoors.

All Julian apples are usually sold right in the town itself as apple cider, whole fruit or apple pies. During the fall season, well over ten thousand apple pies are prepared on a weekly basis in Julian. It is during this prolific season of the year that numerous Southern California tourists descend upon Julian for the cool breezes, the old town atmosphere and the yearly apple festival and parade.

The yearly apple festival and parade includes music and dancing, food and merchandise vendors, gold panning demonstrations, as well as hosting a beer and wine garden.
