Jodhpur which is situated in the state of Rajasthan is also known as "The Sun City" was founded in the year 1459 by Rao Jodha, who was the chief of the Rathore clan. This city has been named after his name only. Jodhpur is the second largest city in the state of Rajasthan and was earlier known as Marwar. This city has been separated into two parts - the new city and the old city. The new portion of Jodhpur lies outside the walled city whereas the old city is detached by a long wall of 10 km which surrounds it from all sides, there are also eight Gates which lead out of this city. The city had a strategic location also during the ancient time as there was a road connecting Delhi to Gujarat. Due to this the city had a flourishing trade and it earned enormous amount of profit by trading in copper, opium, silk, date palms, sandals and coffee.

Jodhpur is a well known tourist destination the mesmerizing beauty of this place attracts many visitors. There are many striking forts and palaces in the city. The fort of Mehrangarh, Umaid Bhavan Palace, Jaswant Thada and Rai ka Bag Palace are some of the well known monuments and palaces. The other attractions of the city are Government museum and the beautiful Umed garden. The city is referred as the Sun City as the weather is sunny here almost throughout the year.

UMAID BHAWAN: This monument is made up of finest marble and special type of sand stone which is known as Chittar sandstone. This monument is an incomparable piece of architecture and pull towards itself.

MEHRANGARH FORT: The Mehrangarh Fort is situated at the periphery of Jodhpur city. This beautiful Fort is among the largest forts in India. The work on this fort was started in the year 1459 by Rao Jodha, who is also the founder of Jodhpur.

Jaswant Thada: This is an architectural landmark which was discovered in Jodhpur. It is a beautiful memorial built in 1899 out of white marble in memory of Maharaja Jaswant Singh II.

Shopping is great fun in Jodhpur as handicrafts made by skilled craftsmen are available in large number. The crafts men of this place include metal engravers, textile dyers and die-makers.
