Jobs In The Transportation Industry

Few industries employ as many people as the transportation industry. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, truck drivers and driver/sales workers alone account for 3.2 million jobs in the economy. There are many other transportation jobs out there, and some of them can be quite stable and lucrative.

One of the most important positions in the field of transportation is that of a transportation manager. These are the people who make sure that the engines of commerce are running at full steam. It is the job of a transportation manager to coordinate the movement of products so that it can reach the consumers on time.

Aside from their supervisory role, transportation managers are responsible for making sure that all transport-related decisions within a company are cost-effective and efficient. Being a transportation manager comes with many responsibilities, but it does offer good financial rewards and a chance to exercise one's leadership skills.

For those who relish the idea of traveling cross country, it might be a good idea to consider a career as a truck driver. Becoming a truck driver requires very little training and can pay very well. In addition to their base salary, they also receive hefty bonuses, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The aviation field is also a good place to search for transportation jobs. Being a commercial airline pilot or an air traffic controller is one of the most sought after careers in the transportation industry today. As such, it is important to assess the level of competition before entering this field. The pay in these occupations varies based on a number of factors, but those who have established themselves can earn up to a six-figure salary per year.

A good alternative for those who cannot find work in the private sector is to turn to the Armed Forces. There is a great need for logistics personnel in the military, particularly those who can maneuver vehicles to move troops and supplies across various locations. Aside from the opportunity to serve their nation, people who work in the armed services enjoy great benefits and stable pay.

While the transportation industry is not completely impervious to swings in the economy, it is a relatively stable field to pursue for one simple reason: there is always going to be a need to move goods and people from one place to another. For as long as the world remains interconnected, there will be transportation jobs.
