Since it is the responsibility of the government to ensure a living for its citizens, the possibility of losing a government job due to unforeseen circumstances is scarce. When the recession was taking its victims, only one sector lived and flourished and that was the government job sector.

Many people prefer a government job to one in the private sector, in spite of the difference in the pay scale. This is because government jobs guarantee job security, there is enormous scope, and the retirement benefits are considerable. With a government job, one can rest assured that ones life is settled and he/she needs to worry no more.

Especially after the recession, people are mistrustful of the private sector and prefer the comfortable security of government jobs. Working in a government job certainly has its perks as there are numerous services that are more easily available to you.

When it comes to landing a government job, you need to keep in mind the basic difference in philosophy between a private and a government job. While the private companies are more worried about their own growth and their own profits, government institutions are more concerned about the welfare of the citizens. Thus a government job is less demanding, safer and has less stress. People often undergo severe mental and physical stress due to the pressure put on them in a private job. In a government job it is not so. A fixed pay and fixed hours is the basic principle behind government jobs.

The most coveted jobs in the public sector are the banks, the railway defense, various government institutions such as charities and schools. Usually government jobs do not advertise widely for ant post but a quick search on the internet will reveal all that you need to know about government jobs, for specialized sectors such as banks there are specific exams that you need to clear and you will be posted according to your performance.

Defense is another very lucrative option. There are rigorous tests which will qualify you for the job, and once through you will need to go through thorough training. However you can be sure that the end will be worth it.

For other government jobs such as schools, if you have the necessary qualifications you can apply directly. You will be subjected to a short interview which will decide your fate.

In a government job there may not be much scope for negotiation, but once you get the job, you will reap the benefits for years thereafter.
