Japanese Pc Companies Face Profit Challenges

By:

HP is the world's largest PC maker. It is considering abandoning its PC business. Now itis the time for Japanese companies to discuss spin-off matters with banks.

IBM has long seen the evil sign. In 2005, it sold its PC business to Lenovo. For years, the commercialized PC of Toshiba, NEC and Fujitsu PC have low profits or even losses. With the rise of flat-panel and smart phones, the situation is even worse. In the mature, highly competitive domestic market, Japanese electronics companies also face challenges. But the management seems unable to abandon the edge business. LCD TV, mobile phones and home appliances all have the similar problems.

The profits of most Japanese PC makers are low and the market share is low. According to statistics, in terms of PC shipment, Toshiba ranked the fifth, accounting for 5.3% share of the world. It is the most worldwide in the PC business of Japan. But in the past three fiscal years, Toshiba's PC business is just break-even or even losses. It is expected by Toshiba this year' margin is 0.9% and the PC sales are $ 13 billion.

NEC PC occupies a high market share in Japan, but PC department lose two years in the past three years. This year's expected operating margin is 2%. This is the worst business. In contrast, HP was trying to spin-off PC business mainly because that its profits lagged behind other businesses. The profit margin of PC business is about 6%.

So far, the action of the Japanese PC companies is sporadic. In the January of this year, NEC and Lenovo announced a joint venture, which is the first step to eventually abandon the PC business. The joint venture may just reduce losses under the premise of keeping the business. There are such initiatives in the field of mobile phones and LCD panels.

Unfortunately, the merger of the domestiJapanese companies ist no good for each other. The companies are unwilling to make tough decisions. Even if overseas buyers are interested in, it is too expensive to buy Japanese assets. Nevertheless, it is the time for the Japanese PC companies to act.

PC shipments in Japan have achieved growth for three consecutive months. The shipments in November are 673,000 units, an increase of 4.8%. Notebooks shipped 470,000 units, an increase of 3%. Desktop shipments were 202,000 units, an increase of 9.1%. Japanese PC companies face profit challenges and it is time for them to take action.
