Japanese Kids And Singing Bowls

By:

When I first moved to Japan 5 years ago I did so thinking about the great spiritual opportunity this would be. I have always been in to yoga, meditation and tea ceremony. Granted that only the latter is specific only to Japan but as I thought of it the best of the best had always flowered here. The Japanese spirit with its search for the perfect cheery flower blossom seemed the most wonderful. Sadly what I found was that most of the people have abandoned their deeply spiritual lives, most of the temples I have visited had a few priests and that was it. Life went on as usual as it did anywhere else on the globe.
I still kept up my spiritual practice as I went by my normal job, an English teacher for the kids. And what I discovered was that the kids were as fascinated about me and my background as I was about theirs. Even 4 years olds could tell the difference between me and everyone else around them and would treat anything that came from my background as magical. Once when a friend of mine came from America to visit I asked me to bring me a few pebbles and the kids were enchanted and I could get them to do a lot of tests and learn a lot of words to get to earn a pebble.
So I thought I would do an experiment and see how they reacted to something that was very spiritual to me although not directly Japanese: a Tibetan singing bowl. I would bring it and tell them it was a magical bowl and that its sound contained a secret that they had to discover. So I started playing and to my amazement all the kids, and this is a class of 15 kids where the oldest is 5, just sat and listened enchanted for over 10 minutes. In the end I asked them what the secret was and each had the most fascinating story about spirits, kami as they call them that would ride in the sky or flow under water.
It certainly made me aware of how magical a singing bowl is. So not only did I get my trust back that the Japanese have a strong although hidden spirituality but that I would have all of my friends, old and new learn about them and I have them all at least check out this site about Singing bowls which actually is the way I first learned about them and where I got my first 3 bowls.
