Rajasthan is Indias largest state in terms of Area. The State with its palaces, fortresses and wildlife is perhaps the most frequented tourism destination among those who visit India. Jaipur, the capital city of the state is a beautiful, cultural city, nested in a valley of the Aravali Range of Mountains.

Founded in 1727, by Sawai Jai Singh II, Jaipur is today among the ten largest cities of India, with a population of nearly 5 Million People. It is also called Pink City because of its unique pink stone Rajasthani architecture. Even today, the walled older part of the city retains the architecture. This walled older part was built by Vidyadhar Bhattacharya, a Bengali architect in 1727, during the rule of Sawai Jai Singh in a grid system with wide straight roads and uniform rows of shops on either side of the main bazars, all arranged in nine rectangular city sectors or chokris. One sector was assigned to shopping while one had temple complexes, while another was reserved for the royal families use and so on. It is interesting to note that Jaipur was the first planned city of its time with the only earlier one being near Taxila sometime in the 2nd century BC!
The City is a major draw for tourists who throng to this historic city to see the mesmerizing and romantic palaces, the strong and impregnable fortresses, colorful vibrancy and for some incredible shopping. It is also a weekend destination for many living in Delhi, 258 kilometers away. It also forms a well circuited, popular tourist triangle with Agra and Delhi.

Some Must visit historical places in Jaipur include the Hawa Mahal (the Palace of Air or the Palace of Winds), the Jantar Mantar, the Amer Fort, the Nahargarh Fort, the Jaigarh Fort and Johuri Bazaar (the walled city market. The Amer Fort lies on the outskirts of Jaipur and has a beautiful pink faade and is the region's most popular landmark. Then the magnificent Jaigarh Fort is also worth a visit and dates back to 1726 and houses the world's largest cannon. Another interesting spot not to be missed here is the Jantar Mantar. It was built in the 18th century by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II and boasts of huge masonry instruments that were used to study the movement of constellations and stars in the sky.

For food lovers, all cuisines are available in Jaipur though one should try out the local Rajasthani dishes. Many say the romance of Jaipur always lures one back to the city. Everything about Jaipur is enchanting.

Within a radius of 150 180 kilometers, Jaipur can also be used as a hub for wild life tourism. Two National Reserve Forests - Sariska and Ranthambore are home to the Indian Tigers, and Bharatpur Reserve is a famed Bird Sanctuary.
