Jaipur An Architectural Delight

Jaipur for long has been considered as the gateway to Rajasthan, the most colourful state of India. Besides being an entry point to the state, Jaipur is also part of the famous Golden Triangle Tourist Circuit, which includes Delhi and Agra.

Jaipur is located to the west of Delhi and is at a distance of 300 km. Jaipur is also the first planned city of its time. It was founded on 18 November, 1727 by Maharaja Jai Singh ""II. He took great care while planning the city and consulted a number of architects. It was under the guidance of chief architect Vidyadhar Bhattacharya that Jaipur took shape.

The construction of the city started in 1727 and it took around four years to complete major palaces and roads. Jaipur was divided into nine blocks, of which two consist the state buildings and palaces, with the remaining seven allotted to the public. Huge fortification walls were built along with seven strong gates.

Jaipur is also called the Pink City. The city was painted pink to welcome the Prince of Wales in 1853. Since then the tradition of painting the buildings and monuments pink continues.

Jaipur has a rich architectural heritage. There are many buildings of tourist interest. Hawa Mahal is the most popular tourist attraction in Jaipur. It is among the most photographed monuments in Rajasthan. Hawa Mahal offers a beautiful sight to behold.

City Palace is another major place of tourist interest in Jaipur. The palace was built by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh during his reign. Among the various forts and palaces in the city, the City Palace stands tall, with its outstanding art and architecture. City Palace complex covers a huge area, which is divided into a series of gardens, courtyards and buildings. Initially, Raja Jai Singh built the outer wall occupying a huge area. The additional grand buildings were constructed later by the succeeding rulers.

Other important tourist attractions in and around Jaipur include Jantar Mantar, Nahargarh Fort and Amber Fort.
