Jaguar Has Supplied The World With Executive Vehicles For Over 50 Years

It goes without saying that Jaguar is world known for producing some of the most beautiful and elegant cars ever made. For the past 50 or more years Jaguar has supplied the world with executive vehicles that truly defined what it meant to drive a luxury car.

However Jaguar is also renowned for its GT cars, and the Jaguar XK has been Jaguar's forerunner for over a ten years. Currently in its second generation the XK is a high performance luxury car, specifically designed for long distance driving. Unlike traditional 'sports cars' GT cars are designed just as much for comfort as they are for performance.

In some regards the XK truly sums up what a Jaguar car is, Luxury without compromise. Even as Jaguar's most powerful vehicle available it is still a comfortable and easy drive. While some similarly priced cars may have slightly improved performance, they are often attributed as being as uncomfortable as sitting on concrete and handling terribly. This could not be further from the truth for the XK.

Assembled in Birmingham, England the entire car is built to the highest of standards. Jaguar's reputation is legendary, and every detail on the XK is immaculate. The all nw full-aluminium monocoque chassis is extremely light weight yet strong, and was originally designed for a concept car, yet has now been integrated in to the XK.

The chassis is available as either a coupe or a convertible, and unlike almost every other convertible created the XK was designed as a convertible and modified in to a coupe, not the other way around. This small fact means that the convertible version does not suffer from having to accommodate the coupe, and as such is far more elegant and sleek. Not only that but the car is incredibly firm and light, giving it amazing steering and performance.

Powered by a mighty 5.0 litre V8 petrol engine and six speed gear box the XK can accelerate from 0 to 60 in under five and a half seconds. Yet even more power is available in the XKR, with its 5.0 litre supercharged V8 petrol engine, doing it in an incredible 4.6 seconds.

Even with its staggering performance the XK is still a joy to drive. By activating the Jaguar-Drive Control the car adapts to how you want to drive. For a more relaxed and subtle power the Winter Mode gives a slightly dampened acceleration and progressive pedal response. This makes it easier to drive in more urban or built up areas.

However upon switching to Dynamic mode the car instantly switches to a much sportier response. Much faster gearshift response times and greater acceleration allows you to have all the power you need delivered precisely when you need it.

With the XK starting at 59,900 pounds on the road, and the XKR from 72,400 pounds on the road neither is especially cheap, yet both are moderately priced for vehicles of their calibre. Voted Top Gear's GT Car of the Year in 2006 as well as the overall prestigious Car of the Year for 2006, the XK has a long history of being one of the best GT cars ever made.
