Jagjit Singh is a recognized ghazal singer in the world of Bollywood. Today the critics acclaim him to be a popular and intense singer. Early life Jagjit singh was born in Ganga Nagar. His father, Amar Singh Dhiman was a government employee. He was originally from Punjab.

He has six siblings-four of them are sisters and the other two are brothers. He was nicknamed Jeet by his family. He was a typical Punjabi boy. He went to Khalsa High School which was located in the city he resided. At his junior level, he studied science at the Government College.

He then graduated in arts from DAV College located in Jalandhar. He did his post graduation in history from Kurukshetra University in Haryana. As a young boy, he learnt music from Pandit Chaganlal Sharma. He later spent six years learning Khayal, Thumri and Dhrupad from the legend of classical music Ustaad Jamaal Khan.

Jagjit Singh is multi talented. He is a ghazal singer, music director, composer, activist and entrepreneur. He is widely respected in the industry which gave him the title of the Ghazal King. He is married to Chitra Singh. They both shot to fame at about the same time.

They both have collaborated and worked together in the 70s and the 80s. He has sang in various regional languages like Hindi, Urdu, Bengali, Gujrati , Sindhi and Nepali.

Career In 1973, he worked as a playback singer for the movie AVISHKAAR. He took a short break and came back to the scene in 1980 singing for the film EK BAAR KAHO In the next year, he further sang for PREM GEET In 1982, he was the playback singer for movies like SITAM, SAATH SAATH and ARTH.

In the next year, he had a couple of movies to sing for. The movies included ZULF KE SAYE SAYE, TUM LAUT AAO and KALKA. In 1984, we also get to listen his intense music in films like BAHUROOPI, RAAVAN and BHAVNA. In 1985, he again flaunts his talent singing for the film PHIR AAYEE BARSAT.

In 1986, he again mesmerizes the audience with his quality of voice in films like LONG DA LISHKARA and AASHIANA. In the next year, he again sings for the film RAHI. 1998 brought with it a fresh set of films to work on. The movies he sung for were KANOON KI AWAZ, DOOSRA KANOON and BILLU BADSHAH. After a short while, he was back to work.

In 1992, he was the playback singer for the movie Nargis. Being a trained and classical singer, the number of movies at his disposal was naturally less. However, he managed to sustain himself in the industry. In 1993, he sang for the movie Khalnayak.

In the next year, he again acted as a playback singer for the movies MAMMO and KHUDAI. In 1998, he sang for the film DUSHMAN.In 1999, he was back to task again singing for the films SARFAROSH and BHOPAL EXPRESS. Again in the next year, the audience gets to hear his melody in the film SHAHEED UDDHAM SINGH: ALAIS RAM MOHAMMAD SINGH AZAD and TARKIEB.

In the next year we again get to hear his mesmerizing voice in movies like TUM BIN LOVE WILL FIND A WAY and DEHAM In 2002, he was the playback singer for the movie VADH and LEELA.In 2003, his voice again created magic in the films AAPKO PEHLE BHI KAHI DEKHA HAI JOGGERS PARK and DHOOP.

Once again we feel relaxed to hear his intense music in the film STOP in 2004. In 2005, he was again the playback singer for the flicks KASAK and SHIKAAR. In the next year, we again get to hear the legendary singers voice in movies like CHINGAARI, ANOKHE AMAR SHAHEED BABA DEEP SINGH JI and Baabul.

In 2008, he had sung for the film KAHAANI GUDIYA KI: TRUE STORY OF A WOMAN. In 2010, he has worked on movies like MALIK EK and SHAHRUKH BOLA KHOOBSURAT HAI TU. Personal Life His wife is the popular singer Chitra Singh. He married her in 1969. They live in Breach Candy.

They had a son Vivek who died in a road mishap in the early 90s. Jagjit Singh suffered his first stroke in 1998. He had to quit smoking. With aging, his body has become feeble. In October 2007, he was hospitalized due to blood circulation problems.

Award In 2003, the Government of India had awarded him the Padma Bhushan, one of the countrys highest civilian awards. In 2006, he had received the Teachers Acheivement Award.
