Jacksonville Jaguars - Hirings And Firings!

By:

The Jacksonville Jaguars has agreed to hire five new coaches. This will include two defensive coordinators the head coach Jack Del Rio has said. In the position of special teams coordinator Russ Purnell was hired to replace Joe DeCamillis.

The head coach in his hiring took up Mel Tucker the former Cleveland defensive coordinator to replace Gregg Williams who has left the NFL team after a season in what his agent termed the departure as an amicable divorce.

Tucker had served three seasons as the defensive backs coach and one season as the defensive coordinator in his four years with the Browns. Additionally he also has eight years of college experience, half of that at Ohio State.

The new special teams coordinator Purnell had previously served as special teams coordinator at Indianapolis under Tony Dungy. Purnell had also spent time with Tennessee, Seattle and Baltimore. Joe DeCamillis who had served in the special teams coordinator position left for Dallas. The Jaguars further added Johnny Cox as the quality control coach, Charlie Jackson as defensive line assistant and Luke Richesson as the strength and conditioning coach.

Mark Asanovich who was in the strength and conditioning department and secondary coach Donnie Henderson (after one season) were both fired by the Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio.

Jaguars sign Zenelka

The Jaguars have signed the 11th-year veteran Zenelka who has played in 128 games consecutively; this ranks as the longest streak in franchise history. Additionally he has tied for the third-longest streak games consecutively played among active long snappers.

The Zelenkas terms of agreement in the signing has however not been made public but the club will make an official announcement about it later.
Zenelka is among other Jaguar unrestricted free agents. The others include Brad Meester, Reggie Williams, Khalif Barnes, Scott Starks, Gerald Sensabaugh, Mike Peterson, and Pierson Prioleau. It however appears that the jaguars will not attempt to re-sign Barnes, Williams, Peterson or Prioleau, this adds to the seriousness the club is showing after the Jaguars got rid of free-agent busts Drayton Florence and Jerry Porter.

Team first or leave

The coach and team owner Wayne Weaver have put players on notice telling them to either put the team first or pack their bags and leave.
The Jaguars released Porter and Florence and said that they were as good as gone a month ago. The team owner said that there will be no hesitation in releasing a player if they see that he is not working well as supposed to. In reference to the two departed players, he said that some players are all about themselves rather than the team.

Porters season with the Jacksonville Jaguars ended with only 11 catches for 181 yards. Weaver mentioned that Porter cared less even when they lost.
As for Florence who was initially brought in to compliment Rashean Mathis at the corner position. In his stint at the Jaguars, he never intercepted a pass but was too undisciplined.

Porter and Florence were supposed to be part of the team that would help the Jaguars to glory but it was not to be, they finally leave as a one year blunders.
