Jack Sparrow - The Witty Pirate Protagonist Of The Pirates Of The Caribbean Series

In 2003, the world met its new favorite hero"if he even qualifies as a hero, anyway. With a penchant for the oddity-type characters from the frail, impossible-to-hate Edward Scissorhands to the vengeful Sweeney Todd (later on, after his success on the seven seas), Johnny Depp created yet another eccentric character, but this was the role that truly catapulted him onto the international stage. This pirate was a new kind of "action hero," one that never seemed to have a set direction or motivation and would rather run away from danger than face it with the usual unfaltering bravery seen in other protagonists. Although the world initially didn't know what to think of him, it's now safe to say that Jack Sparrow is one of the most popular movie characters in modern film.

First introduced in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl riding into port aboard a sinking boat, Jack - Captain Jack - Sparrow has since dominated the "Pirates" trilogy (soon to be saga, with a fourth installment coming out in May 2011). Based on the Disneyland "Pirates of the Caribbean" action ride, the first film was supposed to be focused on the love triangle between Commodore Norrington, Elizabeth Swan, and William Turner. Originally, Disney was startled with Depp's portrayal of the character and asked him to tone it down. Instead, Depp just made the character wackier and unlike any character mainstream movie goers have ever seen.

His technique worked. All three movies so far have been multi-million dollar successes. The swashbuckling Captain Jack was not the usual gold-hungry pirate that spoke with a confusing string of "Arghs" and grumbling. Instead, he was motivated by stranger purposes, all of which usually led to his desperate goal of living forever. His favorite sayings such as "Savvy?" and "Not sure I deserved that," his pleas for "Parlay" in the face of unavoidable trouble, and his constant correcting of people who forget to add "Captain" before his name when addressing him, has made Depp's pirate character truly unforgettable.

He became the rogue, anti-heroic, drunken pirate that the world had been waiting for. Persistently scheming and unpredictable to the fullest extent, some things he said in the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie fit him perfectly: "Me, I'm dishonest, and a dishonest man you can always trust to be dishonest. Honestly, it's the honest ones you have to watch out for. You can never predict if they're going to do something incredibly stupid."

Jack Sparrow has spawned a billion dollar franchise, ranging from Halloween costumes to video games to alcholic beverages. He is the star of a Youtube viral hit from a line he had in Dead Man's Chest: "I've got a jar of dirt...I've got a jar of dirt...and guess what's inside it?" There is even a song by The Lonely Island titled "Jack Sparrow." As one of the most popular fictional characters of our time, it's no wonder Disney begged Depp to come onboard for a fourth installment.

Although unpopular with the women and Commodore Norrington claims he is "without a doubt, the worst pirate I've ever seen," Captain Jack Sparrow has still captured the hearts of millions of movie-goers.
