Italian Bakeries V.s. Spaghetti And Meatballs

By:

Italians are known for many different things. We love their pasta, their pizza, and their desserts; we love their soccer teams, their wine and even their miniature plumbers. Over the years Italy has given us many things to smile at. Perhaps one of the greatest is their food. Some will argue that authentic Italian cuisine is best while other claim that the Italian-American fusion is best, but the reality is whether you go traditional or new fusion, the food just can't be beat. There is something to be loved in both traditions.

TRADITIONAL ITALIAN COOKING
There is something about walking into an authentic Italian bakery that feels right. There has always been that magical quality that draws people to discover Italy. Italy inspires us to romance, relaxation and laughter. Perhaps it's because America was discovered and named after two Italian men: Christoforo Colombo and Amerigo Vespuci. Maybe it's this connection to the founding fathers that rings in our hearts, or maybe it is something that is simply unexplainable. Most are familiar with spaghetti and pizza, however, if you walk into an Italian bakery you may find something else to smile at. Traditional Italian pastries are something to be admired while some of the flavors may not be as familiar as a slice of pizza would, they most definitely do not disappoint. Biscotti, cannoli, Tarelli, sfogliatelle, or torrone. The flavors found here are sweet and mild but they pack a punch. If you haven't had the pleasure of eating one of these delicacies you should. Traditional Italian pastries will inspire you.

ITALIAN-AMERICAN FUSION CUISINE
As well as the traditional Italian bakery, Italy has given us a new blend of food that combines Italian cooking with the choices available in the new land. Many Italians migrated here in order to make a better life for their families. America seemed to have plenty of food, and in particular plenty of meat. Meat was something that for many Italians coming here had been a pricy luxury never before so readily available. The cost of meat in America was so low that many Italian families began to use it in all of their dishes, thus we get spaghetti and meatballs, which is strictly an Italian-American creation. The muffoletta is another fusion cuisine inspired by the new world. This sandwich originated in New Orleans when the Italian men would visit a particular deli to eat their lunches and chat. Traditionally the men would have their meats, salads, and bread all separate, but there wasn't enough room in the deli to spread out all the food, the owner of the deli came up with the idea of combining everything they ate into a sandwich. This was the invention of the muffoletta sandwich.

Whether you prefer traditional or fusion the flavors will most likely make you smile.
