It's Time To Return To Traditional Weekend Breaks

By:

Since flights have become cheaper, long weekends to the countryside have become a rarity. Instead, many people from the UK flock to foreign destinations to soak up the atmosphere of a European city. The trouble is these breaks often leave you feeling like you need another holiday to recover afterwards. We take a look at the traditional weekend breaks that were once de rigueur in the UK in the hope of reviving the relaxing way to spend a few days away.

Weekend breaks have been popular since the industrial revolution revolutionised modes of transport. Trains and cars allowed people of all backgrounds the chance to visit other cities and seaside resorts in the UK. Bank holidays in particular have lent themselves to weekend breaks and the iconic image of a rain soaked promenade lined with tourists sheltering with an ice cream.

Long weekends away have traditionally been a chance for families to regroup or a chance for families to explore the vast array of culture and heritage the UK has to offer. More than anything, weekend breaks are synonymous with recreation and relaxation, whether packing a car for a camping trip or splashing out on a spa weekend at a country hotel.

The rise in popularity of the British weekend break may have been instigated by cash conscious individuals worried about the global economy. It is not just the fact that the public in general are being more careful with their spending habits; the number of travel agents and budget airlines that have become insolvent has increased, with many customers losing their money altogether.

Booking weekend breaks in the UK is an economically viable solution, and one that many families believe they should be doing with their children. The boom in interest for foreign travel has peaked, and a new generation of parents want their children to experience the delights of the United Kingdom, just as they did as children.

With attractions such as Cheddar Gorge in Cornwall, Brecon Beacon in Wales, Stone Henge in Wiltshire and Viking burial grounds in East Anglia, there is a rich background of culture and heritage to explore. There are also many Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, which are protected sites and home to some rare and wonderful flora and fauna in the UK.

Embracing the opportunity to take weekend breaks to some of these wonderful destinations will increase the popularity further and deepen our collective cultural knowledge.
