It Is Hard Not To Gain Weight At Holiday Time

By:

Anyone trying to lose weight has an extra tough time during the holiday season. People are seemingly trying to tempt you wherever you go! Baking becomes popular in many homes, and lots of people are generous about sharing their cookies and cakes. Aside from this, meals tend to get larger and contain more high calorie ingredients. This doesn't mean, however, that you should just give up on your weight loss goals for the whole holiday season.

It's definitely possible to get through the holidays without carrying any additional pounds, as long as you're conscientious and stay alert. This article will provide you with some helpful tips on how to do this.

While it's certainly not impossible to stay healthy and not gain weight over the holidays, you have to realize that it's more difficult than at any other time of year. Instead of trying to fight things and deny the existence of all of those temptations, accept that you are going to have to face those temptations and try to come up with constructive and healthy ways to deal with them. Identify where your weaknesses are and then figure out how to overcome them -if necessary, enlist the help of someone you trust, whether a friend, family member or even a therapist or counselor. You'll be surprised by how much of it is more psychology than physiology.

You want to be aware of exactly what you're eating, and writing it down is the best way to do this. Writing it all down will let you know how many calories you have to burn off when you exercise. You'll gain a much more precise notion of what you eat every day. This will make everything much clearer for you, especially those instances when you stray from your diet (as we all do sometimes). What may have just been one cookie will start to feel like a few later on in the day and the guilt from exaggerating your misstep can send you straight to more snacking. A written journal, however, will help you realize that the occasional odd cookie or french fry isn't the end of the world -or your diet.

You can reduce your intake of food, and also increase your pleasure in eating it by eating more slowly. You'll then be able to take smaller portions than others but not finish eating ahead of them.

Eating slowly will give you a reason to refuse any seconds that a waiter or host may try to hoist on you. You can say "I still have food on my plate!" It will help you enjoy your meals more if you chew everything thoroughly. No matter how much food is on the table, you'll be keeping your intake under control. When you eat fast, your brain hasn't yet received the message that you've had enough, so you just keep eating; slow down and you'll enjoy your meals more.

Keeping true to your diet and exercise program during the holidays may not be easy, but it can be done. It's easy to give up and postpone your weight loss plans till after the new year, but you don't have to do this. It really comes down to your frequent habits -so if you exercise regularly and eat healthy the majority of the time, you can afford a few transgressions during the holidays.
