It has been reported that South Pacific will make its return to movie theaters after over 50 years. It has been also reported that the plans are to keep the classic songs but to update the story with a "harder-edge." Variety quotes Balaban as saying, our movie will be a tougher, more realistic retelling of the same classic story of two very different people whose love for each other transcends their enormous cultural differences, we think there's a whole new audience just waiting to fall in love with its magical score, epic romance and exotic locale. The well known South Pacific is a 1949 musical with music by Richard Rodgers, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II and book by Hammerstein and Joshua Logan. The story illustrates from James A. Michener's Pulitzer Prize-winning, 1948 novel, Tales of the South Pacific, weaving together characters and elements from numerous of its stories into a single plotline.
