Its Never Too Early To Think Of Cavity Prevention When It Comes To Your Baby

Who says babies cant get cavities? Anyone who has teeth is a potential target for tooth decay. This is why it is important for parents to observe the dental growth of their children. Protecting them against dental problems can be established by promoting oral hygiene even at an early age. This is extremely important as it sets the tone for a childs later years especially in terms of habits.

Spotting the Signs of Tooth Decay
Even if your child has only a single little tooth, the potential for cavities is there. Parents must diligently inspect the mouth of their babies regularly and check for signs of tooth decay. It is usually the four upper front teeth or incisors that are first prone to decay in babies. Check for the presence of a white band on the gum line underneath the teeth or yellow/brown discolorations which may appear on the surface of the enamel. Such indicators as well as any darkened or black areas and spots may indicate tooth decay.

Prevention is Best for Your Baby
Preventing tooth decay is surprisingly easy. As soon as the first tooth comes out, make it a habit to regularly clean it with a wash cloth. By gently cleaning over the tooth and gums, you wash away contributors to tooth decay. When the baby has more teeth, choose a specially-made toothbrush for babies. Also use non-fluoride toothpaste since this is milder and babies are less likely to spit it out. It is also best to have your baby drink water after milk or other sweetened liquids to reduce the amount of sugar in the mouth which may stick to the teeth.

Reinforce Good Dental Habits Even at an Early Age
Oral hygiene is best established while your child is still little. You can do this by letting your child choose his own brush when hes old enough and establishing set times for tooth brushing. Furthermore, be sure to take regular trips to the dentist (not only when a tooth issue surfaces). Make the visit to the dentist as pleasant as possible so as not to cause needless anxiety. Its never too early to think about tooth decay AND cavity prevention.
