Is Using E-cigarettes Really Different Than Smoking Tobacco

By:

E-cigarettes are a fairly new product that more and more people are catching onto. However, if you haven't already studied up on them or used them personally, more than likely you have at least a question or two as to how they work. For the most part it's identical to smoking a cigarette, but with a few key differences.

E-cigarettes contain no tobacco. They do not burn, so they don't give off smoke. These are probably the main differences between e-cigarettes and regular cigarettes. Rather than tobacco, e-cigarettes use an e-liquid that is inside the cartridge. This is e-liquid is responsible for delivering the nicotine to the body. As the user takes a drag from the device, a component called an atomizer heats up the liquid, causing it to change into a vapor form. This vapor is inhaled just like tobacco smoke with the same function. It is then exhaled in vapor form and quickly disappears practically untraceable. The vapor is basically odorless, so people nearby don't pick up on the fact that you've been "vaping." Even if they pass by as you exhale, the vapor is non irritating. This benefits the nonsmoker because they don't have to inhale the tar and other chemicals from cigarette smoke, don't leave smelling like a cigarette, and don't have burning eyes from staying in a smoke-filled environment. This being considered, e-cigarettes are a pleasant alternative to have when choosing to nicotine does around crowds of people.

Seeing as how the e-cigarette doesn't burn, it doesn't pose a fire hazard. This makes it safe to use around gas stations, chemical plants, and certain buildings that would otherwise ban smoking for fire hazard reasons. However, smoking bans are just in place for fire safety reasons. Bans protect the general public because normal tobacco cigarettes give off dangerous secondhand smoke. Most smokers think that secondhand smoke is harmless, but the fact is that prolonged exposure to secondhand smoke can greatly increase the risk of lung cancer in nonsmokers. Aside from long term effects, young children, the elderly, and people with respiratory trouble are fairly susceptible to the harmful effects of secondhand smoke.

Secondhand smoke is similar to the smoke that smokers breathe directly into their lungs in that it retains a lot of the chemicals. This means not only are you poisoning your body, your polluting the air that others are breathing, essentially causing the same effect in them. This is why e-cigarettes are the next logical step in the way people fulfill their nicotine cravings. E-cigarettes allow them to satisfy cravings both in public and the privacy of their home, all while reducing the risk of several harmful side effects. While indeed they are different, e-cigarettes represent a welcome change for people to continue to their nicotine habit.
