Is The Movie Orphan Worth A Watch?

By:

In horror films, the sub genre of the evil little kid is one that dates all the way back to the 1950s when Patty McCormack both charmed and terrified audiences as Rhoda Penmark in the 1956 horror classic The Bad Seed. Ever since, horror films have featured evil children on numerous occasions. Now there is a new film that is hoping to shake up the sub genre, although it is already causing a backlash due to its nature. The film is called Orphan.

Kate and John (Vera Farmiga and Peter Sarsgaard, respectively) are a couple who are seeking to adopt a child after Kate has a miscarriage. They soon adopt Esther, a little girl who seems sweet at first, but soon begins to display disturbing behavior. Kate is a recovering alcoholic, a factor that causes many to not believe her when she expresses her worry about Esther, as Esther's bizarre and dangerous behavior is jeopardizing Kate and John's other children. It is soon made clear that Esther is no ordinary little girl, and that they may have invited someone psychotic and evil into their home. The film also carries a plot twist that many will not see coming.

The major controversy surrounding the film comes from the fact that many pro adoption groups and orphans themselves see the film as a distasteful film that detracts from the adoption process and adopted children themselves. The film has also received some flak because many people believe that the film is just straight up stupid.

The film has so far received heavily mixed reviews, with some believing that the thriller has a great plot twist that redeems it of its own incredulities, while others say that the film is not scary, entertaining, or even watchable. It seems to be appealing primarily to the general movie goer more than others who have a more critical eye of the cinema. Many people have also criticized that the script features too many cliches for just one plot twist, no matter how good, to be able to redeem.

It is a toss up of whether or not to say Orphan is a good or bad film. Movie goers who just want an escape will most likely enjoy the film a great deal. But if you are going and expecting a fantastic and memorable piece of cinema, it is probably a better idea to spend your money elsewhere.
