Is Submitting To Directories Necessary?

Some say Directory Submission is Not Worth It

In the beginning there was reciprical linking agreements. Then Google found them and began ignoring reciprical links. Following that wikis and blogs popped up and annoying SPAM forced common usage of the NoFollow tag.

Following reciprical linking came directories. Now many state that directories are discounted by Google also and that one gets nothing for the time and effort one puts into doing hundreds of submissions.

I've submitted two websites to directories. This doesn't make me a pro but my experience has been basically good. (In case you are interested I use Directory Submitter.)

My Experience with Directory Submission

I have a very technical engineering site in a narrow niche. As a result I was being largely ignored by Google in favor of Wikipedia. Subsequently I submitted my website to about 350 web directories in less than a week (10 minutes here, 10 minutes there until it was done).

Subsequent to submitting my wiki to the directories my page rank did not change but my wiki was getting crawled much more frequently. This meant my new pages were shown in Google's search results in a few days.

Shortly many of my pages were appearing on the 1st page of the "long tail keywords". My wiki's topic area is Control Theory and on the 1st page search results for that keyword are dominated by Wikipedia, IEEE, and universities. There is little chance that I will ever remove them from their top slots for that main keyword. However, there are unique analysis topics (those "long tail keywords") where those sites have no presence allowing me to be on the 1st page. It wasn't until a few weeks following my finished directory submissions until I received those high ranking spots. Many times with articles that had resided on my site for months.

Alternatively I opened a Usenet web portal this last fall and almost immediately began submitting it to directories. Submission has not produced any results. But, that site is a portal to Usenet postings and likely suffers from duplicate content penalties.

Old Websites Don't Need to Submit; Unknown Sites Do

Obviously, if you maintain a well travelled site with a PR above four then you do not need to bother with directory submission. However, if your website is new or needing inbound, one-way, links then directories still help. Submission to the directories is free, software is available to significantly decrease the required time, and the links are (mostly) permenant.
