Is Smoking A Concious Or Unconscious Habit?

By:

Smoking, who's to blame our concious or unconscious mind?

Get on familiar terms with that wonderful computer inside your head. First, is your conscious mind, which is everything of which you are aware right now.

Sigmund Freud, the father of psychoanalysis, likened the mind to an iceberg. The small tip of the iceberg is the conscious mind and the large part below the surface is the unconscious mind. Your conscious mind works on whatever you are pointing it at. You have your own evidence of the way it operates if you are in a loud bar or restaurant, going 19 to the dozen in an interesting conversation. You are so consciously focused on that conversation and so intent on listening to the person to whom you are chatting that all the other sounds fade into the background. You listen, you hear and you absorb information. Your conscious mind is that part of you in which most of your learning begins.

Now for the vast area below the tip of Freud's iceberg. Your unconscious mind is that huge warehouse or database of information. You are generally unaware of it but everything you have ever learnt or experienced is tucked away in the back of your mind, the unconscious part, like learning to smoke. What this contains is like a movie of your life. If I asked you what you were doing last Christmas you would have to raid this warehouse. Where you were? Who was with you? And what happened? It is unlikely you were thinking of last Christmas moments ago, but now that I have brought your attention to it your unconscious can sift through your records and provide you with the content. The images of the Christmas tree all lit up, the party with the neighbours and poor drunken Uncle Harry having to be carried into bed flash into your consciousness. And that resolution to quit smoking.

All your learning, including the skills and abilities from your conscious mind and even the genetically predisposed learning passed down to you through your DNA, isstored in your unconscious mind. It is an ultra mega library, likend to the internet but more efficient. It is constantly running in the background, and your whole autonomic nervous system, including your breathing and the beating of your heart, is run via your unconscious. This part of your mind even regulates your core body temperature to within a one degree Centigrade - a little over or under this and you become ill.

So to be succesfull with quitting smoking you have to learn how to eradicate the stored memory of smoking.
