Is Sleep Deprivation Shortening Your Life?

By:

After a long, difficult day, your body needs time for rest and restoration. So getting enough good quality sleep plays a vital role in keeping you energized and healthy. If insomnia is keeping you awake at night, it's only a matter of time before you suffer from sleep deprivation. Once this sets in, the negative consequences will begin to multiply, so it's crucial to deal with insomnia as quickly and effectively as possible.

Just in case you're not convinced, listen to this. Researchers decided to test the effects of sleep deprivation on two groups of lab rats. Now, these are rats that normally live for about two or three years if you leave them alone. One group of rats was deprived of REM sleep only. That means they were allowed to sleep, just not very well. On average, rats in this group only lived about five months. The second group? They weren't allowed to sleep at all and were all dead in about three weeks.

Maybe this will convince you of the importance of sleep. Lack of it doesn't just make you grumpy, it could actually shorten your life. Granted, you're not a rat. And there's no scientific proof that sleep deprivation will have exactly the same effects on humans. But here are some consequences that HAVE been proven:

Inability to concentrate
Difficulty with memory
Uncontrolled emotions, including severe mood swings
Increased reaction time
Chronic pain
Depression and irritability
Greater susceptibility to illness or disease
Decreased productivity at work
Negative effects on relationships and lowered social skills
Increased likelihood of accidents and mistakes

By the way, did you know how many motor vehicle accidents each year can be blamed on fatigue? The number is 100,000 and climbing. That's according to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Think of this way: can you imagine how much safer our roads would be if everyone would just get enough rest?

It should be evident by now that sleep deprivation is a serious condition that can have devastating consequences. And that's just the direct results. If you think about the problems to which these results can lead, the problem is even worse.

Don't accept the poor quality of life that comes with lack of sleep. Insomnia can be beaten. You don't have to start taking pills to cure it either. There are excellent natural remedies and lifestyle choices that can vastly improve the quality of your rest. Your body (not to mention the rest of us out here) are counting on you to get this done.
