Is Legal Resume A Good Gauge For Hiring?

By:

Even among the legal professionals, it is not fair to judge how good they are based on the university they graduated, their looks and social connections. Experience is the ideal gauge to pick the kind of lawyer that we should hire. But it is not just on mere experience; it is the quality of ones experience: the cases handled and won. As Oscar Wilde once remarked, experience is one thing you cannot get for nothing. We cannot just gamble our positions when we are in a legal trouble. It is wise to scrutinize the legal resume of the lawyers that we want to hire.

The general way to categorize these individuals is to separate the brilliant ones from the lousy ones. But we are not skilled enough to make that kind of decision. After all, its batting average (the number of cases won against the lost ones) is not the sole gauge. At the bottom of it all, it is not about the winning, sometimes it is about how you lost. A brilliant lawyer may have lost a case because it is an extremely difficult one to defend in the first place. But he/she would have done anything possible to turn the cards around. Hence, it is a great idea for clients to hire a legal hunter to do the math on who to hire among the potential lawyers.

So how does a legal hunter find the apt legal professional for a certain case? First off, he/she looks on the legal resume to determine the advocates basic legal experience. There are student or junior attorneys, mid-level attorneys and senior-level attorneys. The recruiter will not of course give you a senior-level lawyer for your small case. If you are involved in a serious litigation, the legal hunter will recommend to you names of brilliant and senior attorneys. But it still depends on your financial budget and specific concerns. This is why you must also hire the person whom you can fully trust because you are bound to disclose everything significant for your case to the hunter.

This also brings us to the second important point that a legal hunter will try to find from the best possible candidates. The character of the legal professionals is just as important as their experience. Is the lawyer trust-worthy enough to share your confidential information? Is he/she committed enough to win cases no matter what it will cost? These things are not necessarily reflected on the legal resume, the recruiter will definitely have to do some research and dig up the personality of the advocate to hire.
