Lawsuit funding firms are companies or offices that offer lawsuit loan to plaintiffs. This loan is not actually a loan, but rather a cash advance or a settlement advance for the plaintiff while they wait for the settlement award. Plaintiffs or claimants usually resort to these companies because they lack capital or funding. Plaintiffs need funding or a steady cash flow while waiting for the settlement, and court settlements could take weeks, months or sometimes even years. Such proceedings will slowly cripple the plaintiffs funding, especially if there are bills to be paid and expenses that need to be made. There would be no problem at all if only the plaintiff had a regular flow of funds, like income from daily work. But what if the plaintiff stops working because of an injury or a medical condition, or maybe because of regular court hearings? Then surely, the claimant will have no source of income, thus eating up all his or her savings while waiting for the settlement to end.

One choice for the plaintiff is to just let the proceedings go short and claim a much lower amount than the one being hoped for. Another choice is to ask for financial aid or a loan. This loan may be from credit companies or banks, or it can be from family and friends. But if there are no other sources of financial aid or any other loan for whatever reasons, then the plaintiff might as well apply for a settlement loan.

The plaintiff does not need to worry because it is a no-risk plan given by the lawsuit funding firm, meaning that if in case the plaintiff loses the case and leaving him or her nothing to claim, then the plaintiff does not have any obligation at all to pay the cash advance he or she applied for.

These are some of the major reasons why lawsuit funding companies have high interest rates. Some companies go as high as 12% per month starting from the time they award the cash advance, up to the time the settlement ended. So, are these firms really helping the plaintiff in their situations? Or given the high interest rates they have, is it just taking advantage of the situation?
