Is Justin Timberlake Giving Myspace A Sexy Makeover?

By:

Justin Timberlake brought sexy back, but can he bring back MySpace? This talented superstar has been called into action in the attempt to resurrect the near defunct social network. A recent deal was struck by a little known limited liability company called Specific Media, to take over MySpace. With the purchase comes a strategic plan to breathe new life into it, using the talented musician as a driving force.

My Space was sold by News Corporation, who only six years ago purchased it for a whopping sum of 580 million dollars. Unfortunately for News Corporation, the final selling price they agreed upon with Specific Media, was a mere (in comparison) 35 million dollars. The incredible drop in price is telling of where MySpace stands against the other social media super-giants, like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. However, this fact is being met with ultimate optimism by the new owners, with strong belief that a new approach, along with the creative mind of Timberlake, will make a much needed difference.

Specific Media is a fairly small limited liability company that specializes in online advertising. The new major purchase of MySpace is part of their plan to go from an advertising network to a full media company. The co-founders (also brothers), Tim and Chris Vanderhook, had decided long before MySpace went up for sale, that they wanted to take their well-established successful business further, with plans of becoming a media company. When MySpace became a viable option, they jumped at the chance to use the already branded, recognizable name to their advantage. Not only did Specific Media buy at an incredibly great price, but the sell also included unspecified resources from News Corporation, who is retaining a little less than five percent ownership.

Securing such a deal should hint at the strategic business abilities of Specific Media. Based on the foundation of what they say is to come, it gives good reason to believe them. On top of their own proven talent, they have that of Justin Timberlake. So far, the plan is looking good.

However, reviving MySpace is not going to be an easy task. Timberlake's star power will no doubt bring some new action to the failing social network, with loyal fans that would follow him off a cliff, bringing them to MySpace doesnt seem so challenging. The big question seems to be if it will be enough. In an age where 'Facebook me' is just as common a term as 'call me,' does Specific Media really stand a chance?

Not only do these new jacks have the mega-task of going up against Zuckerberg's digital monopoly of Facebook, but also the difficulty of maneuvering around the obstacles of Twitter and YouTube. As if that is not enough challenge, the new arrival of Google Plus is bound to be a trip-up as well.

So the question remains, will MySpace make its way back to our computer screens? Will we all be swooned by the makeover of our long lost friend? Or will the incredible deal of 35 million soon look like a super-expensive flop? Only time will tell, but in the meantime we can enjoy trying to be convinced by the man who brought sexy back.
