Is It Really Necessary To Have A Remake Of Robocop

By:

There have been a slew of new films that are remakes of old films lately. One of the films that is up for the remake treatment is the classic 1980s film Robocop. Robocop told the futuristic story of Alex Murphy, a police officer in Old Detroit who is viciously gunned down in the line of duty, only to be resurrected by Omni Consumer Products, or OCP for short, as a cyborg. More of a publicity stunt instead of a genuine attempt to get the crime of the city under control, Murphy is released as the newly dubbed Robocop, with no semblance of the humanity left in him. As Murphy uncovers corruption in the police force that leads to OCP, he begins to regain his humanity and memories.

The film was a massive success, with many critics stating that the brutality as well as the sharp social and political satire made the film a shining example of what action and science fiction films could be. However, the legacy of the film was tarnished when two sequels were created that not only did not live up to the standards and reception of the first film, but completely ignored the fact that Robocop had regained his humanity as Alex Murphy at the end of the first film. This led to there being no true character development in any of the sequels, and left many fans of the first film heavily disappointed.

However, fans now will have the opportunity to potentially see the first good Robocop film since the original (emphasis on the word potentially) as a remake is now in the planning stages, with acclaimed director Darren Aaronofsky lined up to direct the film. Aaronofsky has stated his desire to update the film and characters, as well as refocus on the sharp satire.

Many fans of the original film, however, are unsure of the prospects of a remake as it could either restore the franchise to the glory of the first installment, or could just bury the franchise even deeper than it already is. Many fans are wondering if the very design of Robocop will remain the same, as the design is very dated by today's standards. It remains to be seen if Aaronofsky will indeed be the director or not, as the rumor has gone back and forth so many times that nobody is exactly sure of his level of commitment.

As of right now there is no release date, or even a writer named for the remake, but Robocop fans are eagerly awaiting new developments.
