Is It Really Likely For Me To Get Over My Fear Of Driving A Car?

By:

You could possibly think the fear of driving is just something you will have to learn to live with and that it can't be helped or have to stay away from completely and when you have a fear to do with something that many other people appear to perform so easily, I know its easy to feel different and alone. The reality is, it is a myth, it is possible and your panic about being behind the wheel is unfounded and you are never unaccompanied.

At this point, I know your feeling frightened, disturbed and perhaps even a bit dejected about the difficulty you are experiencing with your anxiety, always asking yourself what can I do to get over my fear or driving a car. Maybe you have failed your driving test or even too frightened to try it because nervous tension gets on top of you or even to the point of having a panic attack, there is an answer though.

Learn to control and overcome the fear of driving.

Driving fear is what's known as a conditioned response and every time you go for a drive, or maybe even just think about it, your subconscious mind remembers what happened last time you went driving and how you responded. It will easily recall the problems it caused. Your mind automatically assumes that driving is dangerous as it connects the fear reaction with driving, triggering the fight or flight reaction.

This learning happens by the formation of neural pathways in the brain.

While you are driving and you experience the fear of driving your car, you support your brain's wrong belief and produce more neural pathways, which results in a more powerful and quick phobia reaction, essentially conditioning yourself to be fearful.

This is the process how we learn lots of things, like riding a bike. Basically you must concentrate your attention to what you're doing so that you won't fall, and it's awkward as your brain works out the right balance and co-ordination by creating new neural pathways. Before you know it, as those neural pathways reproduce and grow stronger, you're riding and performing countless little adjustments without even thinking about it. You won't have to worry about riding anymore, as your subconscious will handle this on auto pilot.

Similarly, as more neural pathways are formed in your brain linked to the fear of driving a car, they produce an anxious reaction that is virtually on auto pilot and further impressed into your subconscious, until ultimately it happens separate from you even thinking about it.

Since this brain training happens subconsciously, the answer to overcoming that burning question of how to get over my fear of driving a car is to wipe out the old limiting neural pathways of anxiety and replace them with new neural pathways of peace and assurance. With this all occurring on a subconscious level, the reason why most programs and therapies will not succeed is because they try to resolve a subconscious issue on a conscious level and it just does not work.
