Is Facebook Turning Into Myspace?

By:

Myspace and Facebook are each successful social media networks. The premise for both is simple, create your unique profile and start connecting with other people through their own profiles. The initial difference between the two networks was that Myspace wanted to connect you with both people you knew as well as new people, whereas Facebook was founded on the principle of connecting people who already knew each another. This contrast is quickly fading and may be what ends the distinction between the two websites all together, especially as Facebook begins adopting more characteristics of Myspace.

The first hint came in 2009 when Facebook started allowing users to forgo using their real names and instead choose unique usernames or pseudonyms. Up until this change, Facebook had the perception of being an internet safe haven, since you knew everyone personally on your friend list. Myspace had always allowed this anonymity, which was a driving force that facilitated connections outside of those people you knew in real life.

A main feature of Myspace is music integration. Bands can create pages and users can link music directly to their individual profiles. Facebook now allows not just bands, but corporations, local businesses, causes and brands to create pages users can showcase on their profiles, ostensibly potentially turning a user profile into a rolling advertisement. A new feature called the ticker allows you to see nearly every move your friends make, from what music is on their current playlist to comments they made on another profile or page, even if that person or company is not a part of your friend list.

There are many other similarities that blur the lines between Facebook and Myspace; applications, games, a top friends list, blog integration and video embed options, but users seem to find these less bothersome than the privacy options.

The Facebook changes have lead to a shift in attitude from its user. What was once a controlled safe haven of people you knew is now filled with corporate pages, music and video links and friend requests from unfamiliar faces. That sounds like Myspace to me.
