Is Computer Monitoring Right For You?

By:

Like many things, used one way it can be good, used another it can be bad. Computer monitoring can track computer usage on any computer. It is sometimes thought of as spyware. Spyware tracks website visits, chatroom appearances, instant message conversations, and other personal information.

Spyware is usually installed without the knowledge of the computer user. Often, the one installing the spyware does not even need physical access to the computer as it can be done remotely. This is often done for malevolent purposes; to steal personal information, gain access to financial accounts, get credit card numbers and website passwords.

Everyone knows that spyware can be used to steal. However, computer monitoring can also be used in a beneficial manner. Employees can monitor computer usage by employees. Parents can monitor the online behavior of their kids. Suspecting spouses can utilize it to catch partners who may be cheating.

If you are a parent you know that it is virtually impossible to control your children usage of the computer. Installing a program that will track their activity will give you piece of mind. Or, it may alert you to a potential problem.

There are many reasons to monitor their activity. You may want to keep them from being preyed on by adults. You may want to keep them away from objectionable websites, or you may want to know what their friends are doing. Knowledge is very important when attempting to understand your children and what they may need to grow up safely.

There are a variety of computer monitoring software programs to choose from. You can buy a keylogger, which basically records each keystroke. You can purchase systems that will make a list of every website visited. Or, some programs will even take a snapshot of your screen and create a slideshow for someone to view.

Computer monitoring is often an illegal activity, but in some cases it is perfectly legal. If you are a boss or a parent, there are valid reason to monitor your employees or children. You will have to decide if it is ethical and the correct course of action. Spying can often destroy trust and sever bonds, so the decision to monitor a computer should not be made impulsively.
