Most insurance companies require that the purchaser of auto insurance have a driver's license. Therefore it is difficult to obtain car insurance no license. The one exception is if you are getting car insurance in order to get your license in the next few weeks. Several companies will allow you to get the insurance that is needed and then want a copy of your driver's license as soon as it is available.

In order to get rate quotes for insurance without a license on the form where you are ask for the number of years driving experience, you should enter a 0. If you are in this country from another country and have an international drivers license, you can enter the number of years you have been driving in your home country.

If you do not have, do not intend to get or cannot get a driver's license, it is very difficult to obtain insurance for a vehicle that you own. The reason for this is that auto insurance companies use a driving record as one of the criteria for your insurance rating. Since you do not have a driver's license and are not in the process of getting one, the state will not have any driving record for you. Without a record, most companies will not write an insurance policy.

If you do find an insurance company that will write the insurance policy for you with no insurance, you may pay more for the insurance than if you did have a driver's license.

The problem of owning a vehicle and not having a driver's license is common among the elderly who want to keep the vehicle for their own convenience. Sometimes it is a widow who keeps her husband's car after his death because it is easier to get someone to drive her on her errands if she has her own vehicle. Other times it can be an elderly person who's health prevents them from keeping their driver's license. In these cases, you have a couple of choices.

You can ask your driver to add the vehicle to their insurance policy and pay the difference in premium cost or you can have the driver take a separate policy on your vehicle where he or she is the named driver on the policy.

In either case, the vehicle title can remain in your name, so that you maintain ownership of the vehicle.
