Is Busyness A Bad Thing?

By:

This is without a doubt one of the the most commonly asked questions in today's society. The question stems from the fact that everyone is busy. We live in a busy society.

People routinely ask, "Is busyness a bad thing?" It really is a good question and one worth delving into further.

On the surface, there is a side to the argument that busy people outperform those of us who exhibit traits of laziness. I am not so sure. It is quite possible that busy people achieve the same or even lower levels of productivity as that of a lazy person.

How can this be? This can be accomplished by what I refer to as the mask of busyness. Far too often people run from task to task, phone call to phone call, or app to app knocking off so-called to do's from their task lists.

Does this mean that they are super-productive or just busy? Unfortunately, people will often try to hide behind the mask of busyness in order to protect their interests, jobs, or anything else that can be avoided by keeping busy.

The illusion of busyness masks the fact that desired results may or may not be produced. For an entrepreneur this means that hours of work may produce zero revenue generation. For a corporate worker the mask of busyness results in the unimportant stuff getting done while the important tasks remain open.

So is busyness a good or bad thing? The answer becomes crystal clear to me when provided a definition of busyness from which to explore.

My definition of busyness is 'a state of performing or being involved in meaningless action'.

Daily activities such as taking phone calls, sending emails, and working online are all necessary actions within any business environment. These are just a few examples of many more actions that we as entrepreneurs and business owners engage in on a daily basis.

The more important question that we should be asking ourselves is which of my actions are meaningless? Addressing this question unlocks the answer to our question.

When we engage in meaningless action it places us in a non-productive state of busyness. Rather than focusing our time, talents, and resources on actions that bring us measurably closer to our intended results, we find ourselves (often unknowingly) performing actions that have little or no effect on generating the desired outputs.

Staying free from meaningless action is the very definition of what I define as being 'unbusy'.

So is busyness a bad thing? It's your time to decide.
