Is A Straight Cutter Only Used On Certain Cigars?

By:

Picking out the right type of cigar is only one aspect of having an enjoyable smoking experience. The age of the cigar, the condition of the cigar wrapper, how the cigar is lit and the types of lighters used to light it can all affect the flavor of the cigar. Nothing has a greater impact on the flavor of a cigar than how the cigar is cut. You need to cut the head of the cigar, which is the end you put in your mouth in order to smoke your cigar. The head of the cigar has a piece called the cap, which is glued on to the head to prevent the cigar from coming apart and the tobacco from drying out.

Guillotine cutters can be single- or double-bladed. They are typically very compact and convenient to carry in a pocket. Single-blade guillotines cut the tip of a cigar off from one side of the cigar to the other. The blade must be very sharp in order to make a clean cut and to avoid compression of the filler. A growing number of experienced cigar smokers are opting for double-bladed guillotines that cut the cigar end from both sides. Since the blades are shaped like an arch, they cut nearly 360 degrees around the cigar cap.

To use a straight cutter, you'll need to hold the cutter in one hand and the cigar in the other. Open the cutter's blades by pulling the handles out. Next, insert the cap end of the cigar into the center hole of the cutter. Judge the cut very carefully, as there is nothing to prevent you from putting the cigar too far in and cutting off too much. Ideally, you want to cut just below the line of the cap. Cutting any higher can encourage the cigar to begin unrolling, which can be disastrous.

The best type of cut and cutter to make in a cigar is the straight cut. This is done using the guillotine cutter. Take your cigar in one hand and your cutter in the other. Place the head of the cigar into the guillotine cutter about 1/8 of an inch or so. Make your cut. Now that your cigar has been cut properly with a straight cut tool you can pick your favorite butane lighter from the collection of lighters you have and enjoy your smoke!

It is very important that you wait to cut a cigar until right before you plan on smoking it. Cutting a cigar prematurely will cause it to dry out and lose a considerable amount of flavor. Once you have properly prepared your cigar for smoking, use a cigar lighter to light it. There are many cigar lighters available that will create an even burn. When you create a straight cut with a guillotine cutter or a pair of cigar scissors and light up with a quality cigar lighter, you will be able to enjoy a smooth smoking experience.
