Ironmongery And Happy Living Know The Item Hinges

By:

Ironmongery items are used many times in a day with most people oblivious to their presence, only becoming aware of them when a problem arises. If items are chosen correctly they will provide many years of trouble free performance.

Mankind has used simple hinges for thousands of years and their history can be traced back over many centuries. For example gate hinges can be found in all over the world in historic buildings.

The average person does not usually have an in depth knowledge of ironmongery and hardware products, although wherever possible it is good idea to gain a basic knowledge to apply in the future.

In this article we briefly describe the properties of a hinge, how it works and what makes a good hinge.

What is a hinge?

A hinge can be a simple or more complex device that joins two solid objects and allows one of them to move back and forth.

For example: a hinge is often used to join a door to a doorframe allowing the door to swing open and close. The axis of movement being along the line where the door and doorframe are joined.

How does a hinge work?

At its simplest a hinge has three parts, two interlocking plates with a pin to secure the two plates together allowing for movement.

One plate is fixed to the doorframe whilst the other is then fitted to the door. The hinge is then held together by the pin, which is inserted through the loops or knuckles on each plate. This allows the door to swing open and close.

Of course the hinge you buy is an assembled device and you see it as a single composite piece.

Large hinges such as gate hinges will have more than two knuckles.

What makes a good hinge?

A good hinge will have the following properties:

Plates made of good quality material, normally Brass or Steel, which are sufficiently strong for the load they are designed for.

The quality of the plates should be consistent to avoid problematic performance or even failure.

A quality hinge will have a minimum of two loops or knuckles that should be well integrated within the plate. The accuracy of these knuckles and pin is imperative to allow smooth rotation around the pin.

The plates will have pre-drilled holes to facilitate fixing using screws. The correct size screws should always be used in order that the screw head sits flush with the plate. There should also be enough area on the plate for the holes so that the structure of the plate remains strong.

Any inconsistency in the structure of the hinge may possibly create an uneven load and ultimately lead to failure.

Hinges are not a highly visible ironmongery item nor are they totally hidden.

Hinges are available in a multitude of finishes & designs from contemporary Brass and Chrome to the more traditional Black Antique Olde Worlde style product. Whatever your choice an aesthetically appealing hinge design does make a quiet statement of class.
