Invite Your Customers To Bring Their Friends With Them

By:

By integrating social media data into your website or blog, you're not only able to build niche communities quickly and easily (without your members having to complete a whole new signup process) but you're also allowing them to bring their friends with them. This is powerful as it allows you greater penetration to other networks of potential new customers. Best of all, if executed correctly, this interaction with potential new customers comes via a referral from a "friend" rather than being an overt cold-call marketing method.

Today, social media channels like Twitter, Facebook and Google's Orkut are at the core of building social graphs and promoting the sharing of information. While they've done pretty well on their own, their smartest move might well have been to open their products to external developers through their APIs.

This has lead to an explosion in the development of applications, plug-ins and widgets that have undoubtedly facilitated the rapid expansion of these channels. These allow users to do everything from raise virtual livestock to network with travellers or play scrabble tournaments.

Now, while these APIs allowed businesses and developers to add bells and whistles to social networking sites, the real breakthrough from a marketing perspective was the allowance of data portability. Openness has always been one of social medias founding principles. It was a natural progression then that the APIs had to allow for detailed data to be ported off social networking sites and onto third party websites. Enter the likes of Facebook Connect and MySpaceID which allow users to log into a third party website using their social media profile logins. Now they're able to interact with friends on these sites and post information about their activities here onto their newsfeeds from virtually anywhere.

The potential now exists to create niche communities quickly and easily on the fly. This presents a number of opportunities to businesses and brands to talk to their customers and fans, and for their messages to be spread virally though the pre-existing networks of their fans. And so this increasing interconnectedness brings a number of exciting new opportunities and channels for businesses to interact with their customers.
