Introducing Your Dog And Cat To Each Other

By:

This is an interesting concept. It has been a well known "myth" that cats and dogs do not get along. In fact, in almost all the children's shows, cats and dogs just are not compatible. Of course, unless the show is about a cat and dog that get along, but that is beside the point.

This myth has inspired a common saying, "fighting like cats and dogs." While this is a very old saying, it is not exactly a true way to portray a fighting relationship. The facts are that cats and dogs tend to get along just fine within a family environment. Of course, this is not always true, as with anything in life. But, it is possible for your dog and cat to live in the same house. You do not have to give up your dream of having a dog and a cat in your life.

So, why do people think that cats and dogs do not get along? This is simply for the fact that when cats run, dogs chase them. Sometimes, dogs will chase the cats to make them run. Generally, this is all fun and games, especially in a family environment.

Just because some get along, does not mean they all get along. It is important to take precautions when introducing a cat to a dog. Therefore, when you bring home a dog or a cat, the best way to control the situation is to have a leash on your dog. If your dog is used to a leash through dog obedience training, then this will not be as difficult for your dog. However, if your dog is not used to a collar and leash, then you will need to teach your dog some basic dog training techniques.

Not only should your dog be able to handle a leash, he should be able to listen and behave to your dog training commands, such as sit, stay, etc. Before you introduce the dog and cat, take some time with your dog and practice these basic dog training commands.

It is important to be relaxed when you introduce the two. Dogs can feel your tension and may sense the cat is danger. You will want to reassure the dog that the cat is okay and is supposed to be there. Most of the time dogs are just curious and want to meet the cat. However, it is still wise to take precautions until you are sure they can get along.

Remember to use dog obedience training commands to keep your dog from running and jumping, as this can scare the cat. Let the animals smell each other and give them a little space to get to know each other.

However, you should still keep an eye on them. You may be surprised at who is actually the culprit during a cat and dog encounter. Cats can be intimidating even to a dog as big as a German Shepherd. Sometimes in households, cats rule and dogs drool. Good luck!
