Intro To Guns By Type And Category

If you plan to hunt for the first time or you are seeking a defense weapon to protect yourself it helps to know what types of guns are available. This short article explains basic firearms by model type and category.

Gun Models

Countless models of firearms are made today. Some of them are legal while others are sold on the black market. This article is meant to only explain the types of firearms available but does not verify the legal usage of them in given locations.

Some of the different models of guns used today include the following:

Rifle-Usually these types of firearms have a long barrel of at least 18 inches long. If you have ever seen old movies where a scruffy-looking cowboy tries to chase off an intruder with a long gun with a hand trigger that is what some of the older models of this type of weapon look like. Newer ones are more sophisticated and streamlined but made with the same idea in mind.

Revolver-In this type of gun, the bullets are encased in revolving chambers located between the handle and barrel (tube) of the weapon. Oftentimes, this model of firearm reminds people of the duals and showdowns that took place in the Old West. Although, another type of gun was popular in these days, too. (Please read the Derringer section.)

Pistol-Certain models of this kind of defense artillery look much like revolvers, only with a much shorter barrel-sometimes appearing to just have a little neck between the handle and the tip of it. Other models of this type of weapon represent the typical handguns which are used today. All pistols are made to be held in and shot with one hand, regardless of style.

Derringer-This style is so named after Henry Deringer (misspelling of his last name). Another name for it is pocket pistol as it is one of the smallest usable weapons of its kind. It is meant for use in very small quarters.

Sometimes these guns are so compact they fit in the palm of the hand which makes them convenient for use during attack. These guns were first made popular in the 1800s, and are another type indicative of the Old West. Newer models are more accurate at longer distances than the older ones.

Machine gun-Various types of war artillery and contraband such as bazookas fit into this category. These are often illegal for common use but are sold quite frequently on the black market.

Usually these types are known as automatic weapons because they keep firing until there is no bullets left in the chamber. According to some classification methods, some weapons of this kind may be classified as semi-automatic rather than the automatic.

Gun Categories

Any one of the above popular firearm models may fit into one or more main category. The description of the three primary categories of this type of defense or hunting artillery is presented below:

Automatic-A firearm in this category is one that shoots continuously until the ammunition has been all used up. Some models may have a feature which helps you turn the machine off when you are done using it.

Usually you do not have to deal with those unless you are in the military, though. (In some geographical locations automatic handguns may be available, however._

Semi-automatic-Many variations of this category of weapon will continuously shoot one round of bullets. Usually they do not fire continuously, though. That is what distinguishes this type from the fully automatic ones.

Single shot-The simplest types of guns are those that only shoot one bullet at a time when you pull the trigger. Many of these are now antiques and some models are obsolete. However, in many areas of the world single shot weapons still serve a useful purpose.
