The best way to see the diverse flora and fauna of the country is to visit Sri Lankas network of renowned national parks of which the Gal Oya National Park is one. Established in 1954 to protect the catchment of a large irrigation reservoir, the park is now considered a major eco tourism destination. The 25,900 ha parks vegetation falls into the categories of forest, shrub and grassland. Thirty two species of terrestrial mammals are found here, the most visible being the parks elephant herd that is present throughout the year. Other mammals include the common langur, toque monkey, leopard, sloth bear, wild boar, water buffalo and three species of deer. Amphibian species at the park include the mugger crocodile and the star tortoise. Among the 150 species of birds that have been observed here are spot billed pelicans, red faced Mal Koha, cormorants, grey herons, whistling ducks, oriental darter, white bellied sea eagles and gray headed fish eagles.

Boat safaris to islands in the middle of the large Senenayake Samudra reservoir from Inginiyagala are popular with park visitors. Other visitors to these heavily forested islands include elephants who enjoy the cool breezes, tranquil surroundings and the tender shoots of plants. Sometimes visitors out on the water can catch glimpses of them swimming to the islands, especially between March and July when this is almost a daily occurrence. One of the islands is also known as a nesting ground for many birds. Visitors are treated to swarms of birds taking wing over the water, a lovely sight indeed.

Jeep safaris, another popular way to see the wildlife in the park are said to be one of the best ways to observe the elephant, leopard and bear and offer the best photo opportunities.
