Intervention Helps A Lot

Is your brother addicted to smoking? Do you feel your friend needs to stop drinking because it changes him?? It is then time to intervene in his life and convey to him the perils to which your near and dear ones are pushing their life into. This is called as intervention. Interventions have been conducted for long and are considered to be very harmless. It is defined as an orchestrated attempt by the family and friends of an individual, which might help someone to put an end to an addiction in general.

It in general include confrontational meeting with the individual. This meeting is generally attended by a co-dependent family of the individual and a group of close friends. The concept of interventions is not very old. In the decade of '60 intervention as a help towards an addict was started by Dr. Vernon Johnson. For years to come this was the technique used for interventions and The Johnson Model was subsequently taught at the Johnson Institute. This model pioneered the way of intervention and till today is used for reference purposes. But there are many who accuse it to be of ambushing nature. But still it is considered to be one of the oldest and tried and tested kinds of models.

Over the past few years the models of interventions have changed and modified. Today the two major ones are called systemic and ARISE model. Both of these are invitational kind of intervention. Instead of pressurizing the addict to change it involves more work from the family and friend, how they should work together to make feel the addict at ease. It basically looks forward to the contribution from the family and friends towards the recovery of the individual. The main emphasis of these methods is not to treat the addict as a patient but with respect and dignity.

Planning an intervention is really a tough job because if it goes wrong it might severely affect an individual. These plans in normally conceived by the concerned group of family, friends. It might also include a counselor, who helps the addict understand the main reason for which he should quit the addiction. Those who suffer from addiction understand that it is not easy to quit something which one feels is an integral part of your life.

The addict in normal cases doesn't agree to any sort of help or intervention, claiming that he doesn't need any help or assistance. This is the first reaction of his. This is where at times intervention is severely criticized. There are few who think that this surprising and confrontational approach. They say a lot of deception is required from the part of the family and friend, which is normally missing in many cases.

In fact intervention doesn't just mean help to the addict but also means counseling for the family members lot of work for the family and friend who are organizing the intervention. The counselor who suggests them about the kind of work they need to put in. They prepare letters and notes for the addict in which they describe their experiences associated with his behavior.

They also jot down and declare the things they would not be part of with the addict if he doesn't agree to be part of rehabilitation program. But the main aim is to make him realize that the addiction is harming and changing him. It also tries to convey to him the impact his addiction has on others. This at times is really helpful as normally the addict is used to the company of those people. The family and friends read their letters to the addict, who then must decide whether to check into the prescribed rehabilitation center or deal with the promised losses.

Interventions are one of the noblest thing which might happen to an addict as it helps them understand that their actions are actually not good for him and for ones near and dear to him.
