Internet Vocabulary: From Im Acronyms To Domain Name Verbs

In this advanced technological age of ubiquitous Internet and the constant evolution of electronic devices, it seems that there is an entirely new world of vocabulary that suddenly you must learn. There are slang terms that have entered the lexicon due to the Internet, like noob and pwn (dont ask). There are popular websites that have had their domain names turn into verbs. How often have you ended a meeting with someone new by uttering the words Facebook me? People these days do not even need to exchange phone numbers. If someone knows your fist and last names, or even just your first name but also knows some friends you might have in common, they can look you up with nothing else. They will be able to message you, see pictures of you, and invite you to play different online games. Another example of a domain name verb is that inescapable search engine that just about everyone in the world uses. You know what is being discussed here. Google. When your friend is unsure of a piece of information, how often do you tell them to just Google it versus look it up in your print-edition encyclopedia?

Then, there are technical terms that only the tech-savvy know. For example, there are words like the aforementioned term domain name, which is the part of a website that comes between the www. and the .com. This is the kind of term that you might know if you have ever had to create a new website, because one of the most crucial steps is actually registering a domain name. If you do not even know what a domain name is, you might be a little bit confused when you go and try to create the websites URL. How will you even know where to look? Oh, right you will probably simply Google how to give you website a name and see what comes up! This is because in the days of the Internet, you never need to actually know how to do something. The information you need is always just a click or two away.

Finally, of course, is perhaps the biggest category of them all: acronyms and short-forms that have been derived from instant-messaging. Just about everyone on this planet knows what LOL means (as the saying goes, if you have to ask, youll never know). Even kids in France, Argentina, and Israel use the three-letter acronym, despite the fact that it is meaningless in their languages (French, Spanish, and Hebrew, respectively). It has taken on a life of its own! But there are other common ones you might have been missing out on. ROFL, for example, means rolling on the floor laughing. BRB means be right back, while G2G means got to go. BTW means by the way. IMHO means in my humble opinion. IRL means in real life, which is perhaps the most hysterical of them all if you think about it. The Internet has taken on a life of its own, and become a world so real that personal interactions need to be distinguished from online ones.
