Internet Service - Your First Month's Bill

By:

When signing up for Internet access, many will jump up on the opportunity to get an advertised promotion promising low monthly rates. If you are not careful, what seemed like a great promotional rate can end up costing you more than you expected in your first bill or even after. In this day and age, money can be tight and you do not want to be wasting it.

Before we go into this article, I just want to let everyone know that this is not to bash any particular ISP or cause an discouragement from ordering Internet services. This article is solely produced for the purpose of informing the average consumer of possible expenses to expect other than an advertised rate offered by an ISP. In addition to what I just had stated, many of these fees and costs occurring are in relation to bundled high speed Internet packages, not just an Internet connection.

The first cost that is often overlooked until bill time is the installation fee that comes with the installation of your Internet services. Expect to pay $20.00 or more for your installation fee, which many may not realize is going to show up on their first bill. Check in with the service provider you plan to go with before you sign up so you aren't surprised when your first bill arrives in the mail.

You need a modem for high speed Internet services these days. Not every modem works for every ISP, especially if you are planning on getting a bundled package that includes phone service which is very common for cable Internet providers. Due to this, it is not uncommon that you will find yourself renting the modem from your provider. Modem rental fees on average are not put into advertisements, so expect to pay more than the price in the advertisement per month. Modem rental fees can be anywhere from $5.00 a month or more.

One item called the franchise fee is often overlooked by the customer. Franchise fees to many can be pennies and not cause much alarm, but others can run as high as $10.00 in some areas. This fee is charged mainly through local government and is a fee the Internet provider cannot really have any control over. The Internet provider is charged this for doing business within your area. Many will not agree with this fee but it exists none the less.

There is one bill cost that is all too common and known in the consumer world. This item is the almighty state sales tax which will be billed with your Internet or other items within your bill. Essentially, you will pay per service or product and not per bill in a bundled scenario. You will pay a sales tax for your phone service, a separate sales tax for your Internet access, and another sales tax even for cable television services. This tax is variable depending on the services acquired and the package you choose with your Internet service provider.
