Internet Marketing For Local Companies

By:

Small business owners, especially those who operate in a specific geographical area, are often unsure of the benefits of pursuing any online local business marketing initiatives. Even those who are interested in pursuing such initiatives do not know how to start.
There are two main methods to create an online marketing plan for a small business. The first is Search Engine Optimization (SEO). This means using key words or relevant phrases in the text of your website so that it comes up early in the search results. The other method is pay per click advertising (PPC) wherein you pay for advertising only when the link to your website is clicked. Let us look at some common aspects of both these techniques.

Keywords are key: People search for a product or a service through 'keywords' or 'search terms' in a search engine like Google, Yahoo or MSN. The search results display links of actual websites (SEO) as well as sponsored links (PPC). In both cases, proper selection of keywords is crucial.

Know your target customer: In order to effectively market your business online, you need to know what people are searching for relevant to your business including the geographical area. General keywords will bring a rather wide spectrum of people into your website which may not be beneficial. Instead, you may consider using targeted keywords including the locality you do business in, thereby optimising the desirable clientele.

Have a linkup: When working on the SEO part of your local business marketing online plan, the relevance and quality of the sites that carry links to your website helps impact your rankings and your place in the search results. These websites can be complementary in terms of your business (i.e., related to the goods or services you are offering) and/or in terms of your locale (same market/district/city). Building online relationships with websites of other local businesses is a mutually-beneficial way to achieve common objectives.

Take it easy: Remember, like every good thing, these methods when used in excess can be counterproductive. The main goal of SEO writing, for example, is to produce effectively persuasive text for a well-written web page. Writing that strives solely to place a page in the first few "hits" of the search results, but which offers little useful information or only weak persuasion is ineffective and may case causes potential buyers to turn away from the site rather than generating sales.
