The web is full of marketing driven freebies. Typically, these promotions require personal information or the fullfillment of "program requirements". "Program requirements" is the term used when a promoter desires for you to buy 1 or more widgets from a couple of categories. After the "program requirements" are fullfilled the promoter sends you the gift. The marketers frequently offer more free stuff after you get friends involved.

Program Completion

Because the offers that require nothing more than personal info are obvious we will focus exclusively on the promotional gifts that have program requirements. As stated previously the program requirements involve a few categories of widgets that must be bought. The purchases must be fullfilled in a certain time period.

Obviously the gift is worth while when the widgets for purchase are widgets you already want. As a result the promoters offer as large a variety of categories and items as possible to appeal to as many people as possible. The promoters realize that these offers only make sense if you want what they offer.

Getting more information

To get additional information on any specific program's fullfillment requirements all of them request some up-front info. Usually the info is something simple like a telephone number. I've signed up for multiple programs previously without getting any spam so I assume this info is used to validate you are a real person or that you are in a qualifying country.

Typically these offers have program requirements that include a low end category where, for example, you try some service for 30 days - no purchase required. The medium category will require a small purchase, for example, a book club membership. Beyond this the promotional requirements get specific to the promoter and can vary quite a bit.

Check them out

These promotions should be checked out. The entry fee is minor - an email address or telephone number. Then check out the completion steps. I wouldn't provide a credit card number just to look.
