Intel Gave Arm A Blow

By:

Although Intel made a substantial increase of Atom processor's energy efficiency, but it still can not challenge ARM in the mobile market. However, the company will continue to firmly control the desktop market, and valuation level is low, so its stock is still worth buying.

Intel again demonstrated the company's a series of innovations at the IDF Developer Conference in the last week. But whether these innovations are sufficient to quell the public criticism remains to be seen.

Over the past year or so, Apple has sold millions of units of iPad, so Intel is widely believed to have been opportunities for development. Although the company's processors are used in all Apple's notebooks and desktops, it still missed the iPad, which used Apple's own custom chips.

Intel also does not have any partnership with any competitive Tablet PC manufacturers. But t the reason why this happens is not because of Intel lacks of excellent technology. The company showed off a concept processor that contains 48 core at IDF. Since most of today's processors have only eight core, this product has been far ahead.

Moreover, Intel's CTO Justin Rattner also introduced a technology called "near threshold voltage processors". This new technology can minimize the energy consumption of the chip, thus greatly enhancing the energy efficiency of Intel processors to extend the battery life of laptops or other portable devices. It can also reduce the size and make for a more lightweight computer.

But all this is very far away. The real problem is that Intel has not claimed the credit in the Tablet PC or smart phone market. The annual sales of smart phones are similar to Tablet PC.

Today's market is called the "post-PC" world, whose main leader is Intel's competitor ARM. ARM designed chips for Intel's dozens of competitors including Nvidia, Qualcomm and Broadcom. Apple also uses ARM's technology to produce custom chips.

Although Intel hopes the outside world believe that the company will rely on Atom chips to fight back in the next year, and this was accepted by all the Tablet PC and mobile phone makers. But its fate will probably not change much.

Although Intel showed a lot of cool technology at the IDF, the most efficient Atom processor still can not match ARM. For the smart phones and tablet PCs, the energy is the most important factor to consider. So I think the stock of Intel is still worth holding.
