Instructions On Using Manic Panic Hair Colors

By: Jo Mannix

This article will explain how to effectively use Manic Panic’s range of semi-permanent hair colours so you get the most luminous and long-lasting results.

Introductory information

  • Manic Panic Hair Color uses natural ingredients with no harmful chemicals and tends to sit on the surface of the hair follicle. This means the effect on your hair be the result of a range of factors including which colour you’re using, the present shade and condition of your hair.
  • You’ll get the most dazzling colour by colouring bleached, tinted or porous hair. Pre-lightening your hair is even more essential if you would like a lighter colour or pastel shade as the final result.

    • Follow the instructions that come with a bleaching product, such as the Manic Panic Flash Lightning Complete Bleach Kit.

  • A strand test is a very good idea, as you can then be fairly certain that the colour you’ve chosen will give you the result you want.
  • We highly recommend doing a skin patch test before colouring your hair:

    • Pick an area that isn’t easily seen about 2.5 centimetres in diameter and clean with a mild soap and water.
    • Dry the area ensuring it stays clean.
    • Put on a little of the hair colour to make a thin coat over the area and wait for it to try. Don’t touch it or cover it and leave for 24 hours
    • Take a look at this patch. Can you see if any inflammation has developed? If so, do not use the product.

  • Don’t combine Manic Panic Hair Colour with peroxide or permanent hair dye. It should be used as it comes in the jar to be certain in can colour your hair in the way it was designed to work.
  • Don’t use alkaline products with Manic Panic Hair Colour, which will alter the balance of acids in the products and prevent the best penetration of the colour into the hair. As a result we recommend the use of low pH and non-alcohol setting and blow-dry products.

  • Warnings:

    • Be careful not to get the product in your eyes. If this happens, immediately rinse with water and see a doctor.
    • Manic Panic Hair Colour shouldn’t be taken internally
    • Keep product away from children

And now for getting that awesome hair colour follow these steps

  • Wash hair with a shampoo that is pH-balanced. Rinse very well, towel dry but leave hair damp for colouring
  • Prepare for colouring by going along hair line and covering ears with either petroleum jelly or baby oil, as Manic Panic Hair Colour may temporarily mark the skin. This means you should also wear rubber or plastic gloves. Prepare the place you’ll be using to colour, and yourself as the hair colour can permanently mark fabric and other material.
  • Get a plastic bowl to apply the colour from, and fill it with ½ jar of hair colour if you have short hair, or a whole jar if your hair is long.
  • Starting ½ centimetre from the scalp start to apply the Manic Panic Hair Color using a tint brush, making sure it put on evenly and so each strand is fully soaked with colour through to the hair ends.
  • Also apply upwards from the nape of the neck to the main section of hair.
  • Continue applying colour until it becomes foamy, which means the hair can’t absorb any more colour. With lighter shades of Manic Panic Hair Color, more combing through is likely to be necessary in order to obtain a better colour penetration.
  • Sit with colour for 15 minutes by which time the colour should be completely absorbed by the hair if you’re working at normal room temperature. If your hair is tends not to take to colour well, leave hair under a plastic cap for 30 minutes

    • You can reduce processing time to 5-7 minutes and may be able to get a longer-lasting and more vibrant colour through the use of an infra-red heat lamp.

  • Completely rinse hair, being sure not to get any of the hair colour in your eyes.

  • After-colouring hair treatments aren’t needed, but you can raise the pH level of the hair straight after colouring and so help to increase the colour’s endurance, by combing through equal parts white vinegar and water and then rinsing well.
  • Swimming and hair styling products will increase fading due to Manic Panic Hair Color’s natural ingredients and lack of harmful chemicals.

If you decide you want to get rid of the colour

  • An increased rate of fading can be achieved by using alkaline shampoos, or using a hot-oil treatment from the shops. Follow the instructions that come with the oil treatment. To get rid of some colour with the oil, start massaging in shampoo with no water, and then begin adding water bit by bit until the oil, and some colour is removed.
  • Get the opinion of the makers of lightening and hair colour removal products.
  • Speak to a qualified hairdresser for their advice, or get them to colour over your hair with a darker natural shade of Manic Panic Hair Color.
