Institutions Of Higher Learning Near Austin, Texas

Education is very important to the citizens of Austin and its suburbs. Therefore, it should come to no surprise that there are plenty institutions of higher learning that can be explored in the area. The city is well known for the massive University of Texas system, but Central Texas also has some alternate choices for higher learning.

Austin Business College

Austin Business College offers programs that range in length from 10 months to 18 months of study. Some of the courses of study available here include:

*Legal secretary

Central Texas College

Located in nearby Killen, Central Texas College is a community college that has been in operation for over 40 years. Here, students can pursue associate degrees and complete certificate programs in a variety of vocational/technical, academic, and professional fields. Although the main campus is located in Killeen, the college actually offers over 100 campuses around the world and serves more than 50,000 students.

Southwestern University

Southwestern University offers a massive 700 acre campus located in the historic city of Georgetown, which is just north of Austin. Here, students can pursue a four year degree in a variety of majors, including:

*Education
*Engineering
*Law
*Liberal arts
*Medicine
*Theology

The university is quite stringent about who it accepts, as only about 65% of those that applied in the Fall of 2006 were admitted. Of the 345 first-year students entering the school that year, 50% of them were in the top 10% of their class. In addition, 50% of them had SAT scores ranging from 1130 to 1320 and ACT scores ranging from 23 to 29. A total of 32 states and six nations are represented at the university, despite the fact that 94% of its students are from Texas.

Texas A & M

Texas A & M, which is located in College Station, was the first public higher learning institution to be opened in Texas. In addition, it is a member of the Association of American Universities, which is a very selective organization that is dedicated to promoting high standards for research, teaching, and scholarship at all levels of learning. It is also one of the few institutions in the United States to have designation as a Sea-Grant, Land-Grant, and Space-Grant university. A & M is so well-respected that it is consistently ranked as one of the top 20 universities in the nation when it comes to enrollment of National Merit Scholars.
