Instilling The Qualities Of Sharing In A Child

By:

Most children with siblings manage to learn sharing as a part of their upbringing, but what about only children? Single children find the concept difficult to grasp, because they are so used to getting, that they find it difficult to give; but when trained even they find it easy. Parents actually help making their children more broad minded when they spend time to teach their children about sharing and the effects of it. Lots of parents are keen to send their children to play schools that will discipline their children. If nothing else, at least their children will learn socially acceptable behavior.

The advantage of being in a nursery or play school gives children the opportunity to be around other children of the same age group. This makes them imitate the older ones, when they show what they have learnt at school. This can be seen in the way they share their food with everybody in class. The social skill of sharing helps them to overcome the sense of possessiveness and to foster harmony and goodwill amongst themselves. When children are asked to share their chocolate or favorite toy, most families would have heard their children say This is mine, I wont give it! Caring for people is a social skill where children are taught the art of understanding another person's feelings (empathy).

In a family, this concept tends to get diluted when they learn to share their food, their chocolate with their friends and elders in the family. But it also depends on whether children are rewarded for their behavior or not. Most families dont acknowledge their children when they do something nice. As a result the children dont have a sense of what theyve done is good or bad. The habit of sharing isnt only about food; it could be sharing your room with an uncle or aunt you hate, it could be lending your dress to a friend for a party. Whatever it is, it means developing a mature mind that thinks in a caring manner. This attitude in turn depends on how much of an input the parents are able to give the children in the process.

The best thing you can do for your child is to be an example for your child:-

1. Plant a tree and teach the children how to look after the environment.

2. Read to your child moral stories and stories with lots of care and concern.

3. Make room for your child to spend time with the grandparents.

4. Make your child environmentally conscious by throwing waste in the dustbin.

5. Let your child help you with the laundry or the dishes.

6. Take your child with you to visit a sick friend.
